I feel that Nick had been a true friend even though he did not like him, he was always there for him and is still there for him even after Gatsby's death. He was truely one of Gatsby's only friends.

I REALLY like you- for Megan

I think that people didnt come to Gatsbys funeral because they dont know him, you dont go to a funeral if you didnt know the person, so why would they come? that have no idea who he is or was.

10:15 AM
Blogger Chris B said...

I agree, i dont think Gatsby had any frieds, just people he chilled with. Yes?

10:16 AM
Blogger Anoel said...

I think he was Gatsby's only friend. I do agree that he was a friend because, although he disaproves of him so much, he stays by his side through it all. You don't do that for a pety facination.

10:16 AM
Blogger sarah P said...

i agree with Nathan.

10:16 AM
Blogger Shannon said...

people would obviously not go to his funeral because they were only interested in his parties not in the person that is throwing the parties.

10:16 AM
Blogger Sarah D said...

I completly agree with Sarah P! No one knows each other in this society, they don't even know themselves!

10:17 AM
Blogger Emilee P said...

I think that Nick was not Gatsby's true friend, but I think that Gatsby uses him as a pawn to get to Daisy. Nick is blinded by this and is convinced that he should be responsible for Gatsby.

Blogger Mackenzie said...

To sarah: but they did know him, Wolfsheim had known him for years

10:17 AM
Blogger Megan D said...

I think that Nick was one of Gatsby's friends because he saw something in Gatsby that sparked his cuiosity, but also because he didn't have many friends himself.

10:17 AM
Blogger Jessica K said...

I agree with Kyle. Most of the people that came to Gatsby's house didn't really care about the real Gatsby they just liked to gossip about him.

10:17 AM
Blogger Shannon said...

I feel that he didnt have friends and once that Nick was there for him because of Daisy he became bonded with Nick and was able to trust him.

10:18 AM
Blogger Erin G said...

I'm not quite sure if Nick is Gatsby's friend or not; Gatsby seems to use Nick in his pursuit of Daisy instead of a true friend.

10:18 AM
Blogger Chris B said...

In the society that they live in, can having a lot of money gain you friends easily or make it difficult to get friends?

10:19 AM
Blogger alyssag said...

I think that Nick was more facsinated with Gatsby rather than friendly with him. Nick makes a comment in chapter 8 on page 154, he says, "It was the only comlimnet aever gave him, becuase i deapproved of him from beginning to end."

10:19 AM
Blogger Jessica K said...

I don't think Gatsby could have real friends in the society. He was different from the rest of them. I think that is why he became kind of friends with Nick. Nick wasn't exactly in that society and so they could understand each other.

10:19 AM
Blogger Megan D said...

I think that Gatsby picked Nick out as someone who could be his friend simply for the same reasons he does anything else. He believes that Nick can help him gain something that he doesn't have at the time.

10:19 AM
Blogger Anoel said...

But did Gatsby even know that Daisy and Nick were related?

Mackenzie...which Sarah?

10:19 AM
Blogger Shannon said...

I agree with Christine, ,Nick was not really in their society and that part of the reason why Gatsby chose him as a friend because he did not fit in with his own society. he felt more comfortable with Nick.

10:19 AM
Blogger sarah P said...

Yeah thats tue that Gatsby used Nick to get to Gatsby, but i dont think he became friends with him for that reason because he would have no way of knowing his connectoin to daisy.

10:20 AM
Blogger Spencer Z said...

That's the tragedy though, isn't it? Gatsby doesn't give himself fully to anyone really and so no one arrives at his funeral. Regardless of whether or not people would have been receptive to him, Gatsby didn't give enough of himself to know.

10:20 AM
Blogger Emilee P said...

Kind of what like Christine said,How does Nick fit into this society? Can he be grouped with the other characters?

10:20 AM
Blogger Natalie M said...

I think that Nick represented the innocent and pure character in this book. I think that he was actually a real friend eventhough gatsby used him to get to Daisy. Gatsby may have not been Nick's greatest friend because he was so obsessed with Daisy but Nick was always there for Gastsby to be his friend.

10:20 AM
Blogger Megan D said...

Why is Nick drawn to the mystery of Gatsby?

10:21 AM
Blogger alyssag said...

wow, that was really bad. Sorry about the typos, I meant to say that Nick says, "it was the only compliment I ever gave him, becuase I disapproved of him from beginning to end."

10:21 AM
Blogger Jessica K said...

I do believe Nick was friends with Gatsby. He was one of the only people that cared about him. He wanted to know him where other people prefered rumors.

10:21 AM
Blogger Jordan L said...

I dont think that people came because they dont benefit from a funeral and they all got something from his parties. They didnt know who he was and didnt care.

10:21 AM
Blogger Anoel said...

To Spencer: Do you think that he was justified in holding himself back? If you think about it, had he given more of himself people would have had more of him to gossip about and tear apart as a person.

10:21 AM
Blogger Dan said...

All of this talk reminds me of Social Darwinism, "survival of the fittest." Gatsby understood that in order to stay in society, he must dominate over everyone else. I believe Fitzgerald attempted to disprove the power of Social Darwinism in a wealthy society. The strongest and mightest in the world strying to overthrow each other.

10:22 AM
Blogger Erin G said...

Why did Nick tell Gatsby that he would "find someone" for him when he is trying to find people to come to the funeral?

10:22 AM
Blogger Kristin L said...

In reference to Nathan's question, I think that Nick admires Gatsby because Gatsby represents that image of the opulent upper class that can only exist if we don't hold it too tight...it survives only within its intangibility. Gatsby IS hope, in a way--that thing that sings the tune without the words. What's not to admire?

10:22 AM
Blogger Natalie M said...

I think that Nick was not ever really apart of the society because he did not have the money it took and the attitude to be apart and he was like Gastby in the sence that he just stood back and watched the people of the society.

10:22 AM
Blogger alyssag said...

Do you think that this book is an accurate portrayal of our society today? Or do you think it is exaggerated at all?

10:23 AM
Blogger sarah P said...

even if the owl-eyed man was drunk at the time of their conversation, he as there, and he was someone of the society. Everyone at that party was either drunk, or on their way and the owl-eyed man represents each one of them and how their lifestyle is of the care-free yet curious (the books)

10:24 AM
Blogger Jordan L said...

I agree with natalie that Nick was the innocent narrator who was just thrown into this. He was a real friend to Gatsby even though Gatsby used Nick to get to DAisy.

10:24 AM
Blogger Natalie M said...

In Responce to Kakos: There are alot of things not to admire about Gatsby. The way he got his money and the obsession he had for Daisy. There are good qualities in everyone and his was Hope but you cannot overlook his unethical dealings and deciet. taking everything into account can you judge him as a whole person?

10:25 AM
Blogger Jessica K said...

I don't think this book is an accurate portrayal of our society. Of course there will always be people who only care about money and themselves but for the most part I think many peole have learned to live for something more than just money and high society lifesytles.

10:25 AM
Blogger alyssag said...

I think that what we should not admire in Gatsby is the way in which he stays part of this upper class. he lives a lie. He doesn't make his living in a fair legal way, and he is trying to hard to be someone that he just isn't all for one girl. I think that Gatsby is foolish

10:26 AM
Blogger Emilee P said...

like what Jenn said, the west is kind of unknown, so, there you can develop who you want to be

10:26 AM
Blogger Anoel said...

In addition to what Sarah P said, I like to think of what the books represent. I think that it is interesting that the owl-eyed man is so surprised that the books are real, not just cardboard cut outs, sort of like the upper class people. Everyone sees the rich as perfect, but once people look close enough they see that there is so much more. Does that make any sense?

10:26 AM
Blogger Erin G said...

Jessica K- Are you sure? Isn't this what Chris McCandless was trying to transcend?

10:27 AM
Blogger Megan D said...

Although many people in our society today are completely wrapped up in their own lives, and too concerned with themselves to be concerned with others, I don't think it is to the degree that is portrayed in the book.

10:27 AM
Blogger Sarah D said...

Way to go Jessica Kelm! the society presented in Gatsby is so ignorant and self centered. There are still people like this in today's society. But in 2007, people can truly love one another, without having to cover-up every little thing that they do wronge.

10:29 AM
Blogger lauren f. said...

I agree with Jordan in that the people wouldn't just show up to the funeral to get something out of it. You can't go to a funeral and feel good about it. They showed up to show their approval of Gatsby as a human being. No one really knew him that well but they accpeted him and enjoyed the parties that he supplied for them.

10:29 AM
Blogger Chris B said...

i disagree jessica

I mean, it's not like our society is upseesed with money, drinking and sex. Its not like everyother day you hear about a divorce because of chating on judge judy. It not like everyday on the news there a murder becasue some pyscho got bored watching his all to predictable sitcoms, right??

Sorry for the sarcasm.

10:29 AM
Blogger Jessica K said...

In response to anoel, the owl-eyed man is really the only one at Gatsby's parties who actually looks a little deeper into his life. The man wants to know the real Gatsby, not just the I rumors. It just shows that there is always someone wanting to know more than just what meets the eye.

10:29 AM
Blogger J Hunt said...

I aslo disagree with jessica. Some people have learned to live for more than moeney and materialistic desires, but i think that our society as a whole still does. Money pretty much rules most peoples decisions.

10:29 AM
Blogger Sarah D said...

Sorry, that would be -wrong.

10:29 AM
Blogger Christine b. said...

At first I belived that Gatsby is no hero however after reading Ms. Kakos comment I have mixed feelings. I dislike that Gatsby devoted his whole life to one single goal however I admire Gatsby's hope and determination to achieve this goal, even when success is impossible. This connects back to the green light that Nick sees Gatsby staring at when he first meets him, especially because green represents hope.

Is the book a true portrayal of American society in the '20's?

10:30 AM
Blogger Chris B said...

to ering g-

yes

10:31 AM
Blogger sarah P said...

To chris: yeah those things dont happen in OUR society, but this is not our society we are talking about.

10:31 AM
Blogger Sarah D said...

I agree with Spencer, if there is no hope then why is there any reason for living.

10:31 AM
Blogger Kelly O said...

To amanda- I agree with what you said about the books. It is like the most people of the society are just fake cardboard cutouts and finding someone who is truly themselves is near impossible, and if you did find a real person you would be shocked just like the owl-eyed man is when he discovers that the books are real. Even though he did not truly know Gatsby, the owl-eyed man must have thought Gatsby was not as fake as the rest of the society, so he went to Gatsby's funeral.

The green light at the end of the dock was Gatsby's hope that kept him going untill his death. green symbolizes growth and fertility; Gatsby could never reach these.

10:32 AM
Blogger Shannon said...

i feel like that the color green was to show what people strive for. He looked out at the green light striving for Daisy.

10:32 AM
Blogger lauren f. said...

The green light was the hope in Gatsby's mind to keep him alive and wanting Daisy. The book also ended with the green light. The color green can represent wealth but also jealousy. Gatsby was jealous of Tom and his trophy wife so that is what keeps Gatsby separate from the others.

10:32 AM

In response to Chris B's society rave...

I agree compleatly. Our society is just as corrupt as theirs. Well said.

I agreee with Natalie, the light represnts the hope and desie

10:33 AM
Blogger Jessica K said...

To erin g, yes I do think it's an acurate portrayal of the 20's society, but maybe even to an extreme, meaning the murder. I think that the emotions people are feeling in that society come into the book through actions.
